The Federal Court of Australia ordered, this Monday (22), the removal within 24 hours of a video from platform X, owned by businessman Elon Musk.
The content in question is related to an attack last week against an Assyrian bishop inside a church in Sydney. The religious leader was stabbed at the time.
The Australian Safety Commission said it requested the court order after the platform ignored an extrajudicial communication to take the media offline.
In response, the billionaire stated that his company had already removed the video from circulation in the country and it was another attempt at censorship on the social network. “We have already censored the content in question in Australia, pending legal appeal, and it is only available on servers in the United States,” Musk posted on his profile on the platform.
According to the businessman, the request to remove content worldwide is just an attempt at “global censorship” by Australia. “Our concern is that any country can censor content for all other countries,” said the tycoon, who then asked: “what would stop any country from controlling the entire internet?”
Shortly after the businessman's demonstration, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese criticized Musk, calling the owner of X an “arrogant billionaire who believes he is above the law”, in a statement on the broadcaster ABC. The businessman then responded to the prime minister that he does not believe “he is above the law”.
