The National Energy Control Center (Cenace) announced this Wednesday that the country’s electrical system has been placed in ‘Operational Alert State’, although the actions entailed by this measure have not been specified.
In an official statement, Cenace declared the ‘Operational Alert State’ as of 2:46 p.m. (central) on May 8, 2024, indicating that it will carry out the necessary operational actions.
According to the Government of Mexico website, the electrical system enters ‘Alert Operational State’ when its variables, such as voltages or frequency, remain within their operational limits and the network can face a contingency without losing stability.
This decision by Cenace comes after the blackouts recorded on Tuesday in numerous cities in almost half of the country’s statesincluding Mexico City.
The supply outages occurred after the agency declared an ‘Emergency Operating State’ in the electrical system, due to high demand and a low operating reserve margin.
Until now, the Federal electricity commission (CFE) has not provided details on the number of affected users or the cities affected by the supply outages.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador attributed the situation to the heat wave that the country is going through, with temperatures above 40 degrees in several states.
However, the opposition and businessmen have questioned the government’s energy policies, accusing it of favoring the CFE and hindering private investment in renewable energy.
In the midst of these criticisms, López Obrador met with the director of the CFE, Manuel Bartlett, although no details have been revealed about the decisions made at the meeting.
The opposition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez and the Citizen Movement (MC) candidate, Jorge Álvarez Máynez, have called for a greater weight of private investment in electricity generation and have urged measures to be taken to improve the national electrical system.
