Yesterday, Congolese Foreign Minister Jean-Claude Jakoso confirmed that work is continuing to hold a Libyan national reconciliation conference. Jakoso, whose country chaired the high-level committee formed by the African Union on Libya, said that elections cannot be held without prior reconciliation, in response to the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Abdullahi Batili, submitting his resignation from his position.
The Congolese minister’s position, which came in a statement, is the first position issued by the African Union following the announcement of Batili’s resignation from his position last Tuesday, and the postponement of the national reconciliation conference in Libya, which was scheduled to be held on April 28.
The Congolese minister stressed “the necessity of strengthening the reconciliation process in Libya, otherwise the upcoming elections may be a new source of violence, and we understood this from the beginning and made it the main focus of our attention.” He explained that “the issue of reconciliation is still on the table, and we are forced to slow down the pace of our work while waiting for the United Nations to appoint another envoy in Libya,” pledging to continue working on this path to convince not only the Libyans, but also the countries and powers that, in one way or another, exercise their influence on Libya. Libyan arena.
Batelli submitted his resignation to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, last Tuesday, considering that the differences between the Libyan parties prevented the ability to find a political solution to the crisis in the country. He announced in his briefing to the Security Council that “the Libyan National Reconciliation Conference has been postponed to an indefinite date.” .
In this context, National Security Advisor Ibrahim Bouchnaf discussed with the Italian Ambassador to Libya, Gianluca Alberini, the prospects for the political process in Libya.
The Italian Embassy in Libya stated, on its page on the “X” website, that the ambassador met during a new mission in Cyrenaica with the National Security Advisor.
Discussions focused on the prospects for the political process in light of the resignation of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and common security issues.
