No Ferrari (and Hamilton) for Newey
65 years old, a record-breaking career and only three regrets. Adrian Newey He has never made a secret of it: despite the series of triumphs that make him by far the most successful designer in the history of Formula 1, he missed not having worked with Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and at Ferrari. The idea of overcoming two of its biggest shortcomings in one fell swoop by joining the seven-time world champion on the train to Maranello was much more than a simple suggestion. Indeed, never before has the Prancing Horse come so close to dressing the English genius in red.
But then came what Frederic Vasseur called “different ideas” in a recent interview withTeam. With the result that the only red thing we’ll see around Newey in the next few years will be the legendary scarlet-covered notebookon which the record designer usually jots down ideas, thoughts and reflections at every walk on the starting grid of a GP. A colour that is perhaps coincidental or perhaps a reminder of what could have been and that, for various reasons and at various moments in his long career in Formula 1, ultimately never was.
The challenge with Aston Martin and Alonso
So we start again from here. From Silverstone, from the news that has been in the air for weeks and that today has finally become official: starting next spring, Adrian Newey will be in Aston Martin. He will console himself with a king’s salary and the possibility of overcoming at least one of his three regrets.working closely with Fernando Alonso. The same one who, at the time of Sebastian Vettel’s successive triumphs, had repeatedly declared that he was fighting almost quixotically more against Newey’s super Red Bull than against Seb. Now Fernando will have his lifelong rival at his side and who knows, maybe for once he can be credited with having made the right career choice, renewing his contract with Aston for at least two years. End of the most intricate soap opera of the season.
The dream team by Lawrence Stroll
Newey will lead what is easily defined as a dream team of talented, experienced and qualified technicians. Perhaps it will impart more ideas and suggestions than actual orders.but it is certain that his former right-hand man at Red Bull, Dan Fallows, but also the former Ferrari technical director, Enrico Cardile, will be there to collect his precious assists. And then the head of engineering Luca Furbatto and the former DT of Mercedes and Red Bull, Bob Bell, with the former guru of Mercedes power units, Andy Cowell, in the new role of CEO of the team. A dream team, in fact, which has few precedents in the history of F1 and which, between the implicit strategy of weaken direct opponents and the will of to make the best minds on the market available to the Aerodynamic Geniuspromises to relaunch Aston Martin and take it to the top of world motoring for the first time.
Newey, record-breaking F1 career
Then, if it is true that – as Vasseur recalled – the “PSG did not win the Champions League” despite all the champions who have passed under the Eiffel Tower in recent years, it is equally true that entrusting the keys to the technical project to someone like Adrian Newey is (almost) a guarantee of success. The numbers of an unrepeatable career speak for themselves, with 13 drivers’ and 12 constructors’ titles, more than 200 GP victories and 200 pole positions achieved.
With the exception of his debuts at March and then Leyton House, Newey has won everywhere and more than once. He did it at Williams between 1992 and 1997 (although in the midst of the tragedy of Ayrton Senna’s death), with McLaren in the two-year period 1998-99 and finally with Red Bull from 2010 to 2013 and from 2021 to 2023, awaiting the final results of this part-time season. But it’s not just a question of numbers, as well as sensitivity: Adrian occasionally enjoys driving racing cars on the track and his drivers swear that no one, more than him, is able to understand their needs and solve their problems. Who knows, maybe it will take many years anyway or maybe the Aston story in Formula 1 will really become similar to that of PSG in football. What is certain, however, Lawrence Stroll has sown well and the harvest promises to be abundant.
