Defeat for Erdogan in the local elections in Türkiye. In Istanbul and Ankara the outgoing mayors, Ekrem Imamoglu and Mansur Yavas, beat the candidates supported by the Turkish president, who had already lost in the two largest Turkish cities in the consultations five years ago. “Today our voters have made a very important decision, they have decided to establish a new policy in Turkey,” said Ozgur Ozel, the Secretary of the main opposition party CHP. “We achieved a historic result,” he added.
Erdogan admits the negative result: “Unfortunately we could not obtain the result we wanted in the elections,” said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during a speech from the headquarters of his AKP party in Ankara, broadcast by state TV TRT. His candidates lost in Ankara, Istanbul and all the major cities of the country. “God willing, we will continue our path by winning,” added the Turkish president.
In many neighborhoods of Istanbul, voters of the main opposition party CHP celebrated en masse Imamoglu's reconfirmation as mayor, after he had already won five years ago, wresting the city on the Bosphorus from President Erdogan's political movement.
