Several studies conclude that cinnamon can improve brain performance. The spice is also said to protect against Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Berlin/Birdschand – Who under dementia suffers, who is confronted with a gradual deterioration of several mental abilities. Dementia can affect the cognitive as well as the emotional and social areas. A cure is not known to this day. But there are at least different ways to keep the risk of dementia as low as possible.
According to several studies, this also includes the intake of cinnamon. The spice is said to protect against Alzheimer’s and dementia. It is also suitable for improving brain performance. This is the result of a review of over 40 studies. This is reported by kreiszeitung.de.
Cinnamon can protect against dementia in old age – according to studies, spice can also improve brain performance
Who is suffering from Alzheimer’s and a often also gender-related dementia wants to protect, according to the study results, should resort to cinnamon. After reviewing more than 40 cinnamon studies, it was found that a daily pinch of the spice makes learning easier and protects against dementia in old age.
researchers of Birjand University of Medical Sciences evaluated in Iran numerous studies from, which dealt with the effect of cinnamon on brain performance. And the vast majority of these studies would have found that cinnamon consumption significantly improves learning and memory in humans.
Which compounds in cinnamon can improve brain performance – and protect against dementia
The so-called in-vivo studies – real living organisms such as humans, rodents or other animals were examined – showed that the components contained in cinnamon, such as eugenol, cinnamic aldehyde and cinnamic acid, have a positive effect on cognitive function.
How strong is dementia in Germany – also in the future?
According to information from the German Alzheimer Society (DAlzG), live in Germany in about 1.8 million people with dementia. Most of them are affected by Alzheimer’s disease. And: In the course of 2021 alone, around 440,000 people were newly diagnosed with dementia.
The DAlzG refers to demographic changes within society, as a result of which there would be far more new cases than deaths among those who were already ill. And for this reason, the number of people with dementia is constantly increasing.
Depending on how the age structure of the population develops overall, “the number of people over 65 with dementia will increase to 2.4 to 2.8 million by 2050,” according to the DAlzG. (Data as of August 2022)
On top of that, in vitro studies – which take place in an artificial environment (e.g. in the laboratory or in a test tube) or, more generally, outside of living organisms – have shown that these compounds increase cell growth and cell viability and slow down deposits of tau proteins. And the latter are suspected of being involved in the development of Alzheimer’s and the dementia also promoted by diseased teeth to be involved.
Cinnamon reduces the risk of dementia in the elderly – and promotes learning in younger people
In the studies, cinnamon is often and literally referred to as a spice for young and old. In concrete examples, one study asked young people to chew cinnamon gum. Overall, the study reported positive results suggesting that chewing cinnamon gum improves memory while reducing anxiety levels, such as those associated with exam stress.
It goes on to say that, according to the findings of other studies, cinnamon also has a positive effect on older people. The spice would massively reduce the risk of dementia or have a protective effect. There is also Foods that actually increase the risk of dementia.
However, the results were not always clear. When prediabetic participants were asked to eat a slice of bread with two grams of cinnamon every day, no significant differences in memory performance could be determined afterwards.
Cinnamon as an important key against cognitive diseases such as dementia? Further studies are pending
However, the majority of the systematic review would indicate that cinnamon has a positive effect on brain performance. And that can reduce the risk of dementia, which varies in men and women. Now the research team from Iran hopes to inspire other scientists to further study the effects of cinnamon on memory.
Cinnamon may even hold an important key to prevent and treat neurological diseases or learning disabilities more extensively. That’s the researchers’ hope. And of course everyone involved.
