Accidents|First, Onnibus cars crashed twice in Helsinki, then a fire broke out in the company’s car in Huittinis.
Bus company Two more accidents happened to Onnibus cars on Friday after Thursday’s crash.
First, the company’s car crashed into a traffic light pole in Kallio, Helsinki in the afternoon, and later in the evening, a fire broke out in the company’s other car, which was on its way from Tampere to Huittisi.
On Thursday, the Onnibus bus bumped into to the railing of the ramp of the parking garage in the center of Helsinki. The bus got stuck on its bottom and was left hanging in the air by its bow.
“This is a sad blur of coincidences. There’s nothing else to say,” says Koiviston Auto’s Group CEO Henrik Mikkola for HS. Onnibus is part of the Koivisto Auto group.
“Of course it’s sad now,” Mikkola commented on the series of three unfortunate events.
Mikkola says that the temperature in the engine compartment of the car on the way to Huittisi rose, after which the car driver stopped the car and checked the situation.
“After all, the start of the small fire there was due to a technical fault. The driver performed the initial extinguishing with a hand fire extinguisher, and the rescue service completed the treatment,” says Mikkola.
No one was injured in the situation, and according to Mikkola, the passengers were taken to Huittisi in another car.
A few countries an hour earlier on Friday, the company’s second car crashed into a traffic light pole in Helsinki. According to Mikkola, the side glass of the car was damaged in the collision.
It was the same turn as in Thursday’s accident, i.e. the car traveling from Helsinki to Kotka.
“I can say on a general level that in city traffic, and especially in the direction of Kallio, where there are tight spots, bends and lots of traffic light poles and signs along the street, it is enough that the driving line is ten centimeters wrong. Then the side of the car can catch the traffic signs and lights,” says Mikkola.
An Onnibus bus drove through the edge of the ramp leading to Asema-aukio parking garage in the center of Helsinki on Thursday.
Thursday the police are currently in charge of investigating the collision, says Mikkola. Onnibus also started its own investigation, but according to Mikkola, it is on hiatus while the police do their work.
Commercial Director of Onnibus Petteri Rantala assessed on Thursday to STT that the cause of the accident was probably the failure of the bus’s brakes.
According to Mikkola, this cannot be ruled out, but it cannot be confirmed either. He states, however, that multiple safeguards are built into the bus brake systems.
“Such a scenario where the brakes on a bus could completely disappear is something I have never come across in the industry,” says Mikkola, who has been in the industry for more than 20 years.
Therefore, according to him, it is very unlikely that the brakes will fail.
“But everything is possible. Even those space rockets fall. This requires a thorough investigation.”
They also told about Friday’s accidents, among other things Evening newspaper and MTV News.
