The Department of Municipalities and Transport, represented by Abu Dhabi Transport, in cooperation with all partners, has introduced updates to the civil aviation strategy, making the Emirate of Abu Dhabi a center for the drone industry, smart transportation, and innovation in the field of air transport.
Humaid Saber Al Hamli, Acting Director of the Air Transport Department at Abu Dhabi Transport, explained that the development of the civil aviation strategy aims to increase the connection of the emirate to the world, provide the highest levels of service, and support the regulatory role of Abu Dhabi Transport to ensure sustainable growth of the sector.
Al Hameli told Al-Ittihad that the legislative framework has been put in place to strengthen the emirate’s position as a global center in the field of drones and advanced air transport, which aims to ensure the safe use and operation of drones, and to maintain the security and safety of the airspace and infrastructure in the emirate.
He added that all updates to the strategy and legislative framework contribute to creating an attractive and encouraging environment for investment in the drone sector in the emirate, and enhancing the emirate’s position in the field of planning, designing and constructing unmanned airports and their infrastructure.
Regarding the recent decision issued by the Department of Municipalities, Transport and Private Affairs regarding regulating the civil use of drones and related activities in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, Al Hameli explained that the next stage will witness the preparation of regulations for the decision and the organization of the work of drones, in a way that ensures the safe use of drones. And manage its operations and related activities.
He stated that the next stage will witness the holding of awareness workshops for all targeted groups of individuals, companies, and government agencies, especially since the decision applies to all types of drones, and the activities associated with them, which include design, manufacturing, assembly, modification, inspection, or maintenance activities, or the development of simulation, training, and qualification systems. And clubs, and the establishment of infrastructure, airports, fuel and energy refueling stations, or other activities, and uses related to drones in the emirate, including free zones, with the exception of drones specified in Federal Decree Law No. (26) of 2022 regarding the regulation of civil use. The Department of Municipalities and Transport, in accordance with Resolution No. (48) of 2024, undertakes several functions in accordance with current legislation, namely monitoring and issuing the necessary permits and approvals for the operation of drones, including setting rules related to the conditions for flying drones in the skies of the emirate’s territory, and standards for establishing infrastructure.
