Next to the building he had written the word “children” to warn that there were civilians inside
Some 300 people died as a result of the attack launched by Russia on a theater in the Ukrainian town of Mariúpol, according to local authorities, who have recalled that the word “children” had been written next to the building to warn that there were civilians inside.
The attack occurred on March 16 and, until now, an approximate balance of victims had not been offered. The City Council has assured that there would be about 300 fatalities, based on what witnesses have declared.
The authorities have expressed their sorrow for “all the innocent victims of the crazy war waged against Ukraine”, started on February 24 by order of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.
Moscow has justified the attack on the theater by claiming that it was a military objective, a pretext similar to that used in other controversial incidents such as the bombing of a hospital in the same area or the recent attack on a shopping center on the outskirts of kyiv.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights estimates that 1,035 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since the conflict broke out, including 90 children. However, he assumes that the real number of victims will be “considerably higher”, in part due to the lack of data on what happened in areas such as Mariupol.
