A 20-year-old French mountaineer has died after falling on the Mont Blanc massif. He proceeded downhill, with a companion, on the crest of the Italian-French border, in the stretch that goes from the Domes de Miage to the Durier refuge.
“He was correctly equipped and fell on the Italian side” of the massif, explains a spokesperson for the Peloton de Haute Montagne of the Chamonix gendarmerie (France), which conducted the searches.
The accident occurred at around 3,400 meters above sea level: “The mountaineer fell for around 150 metres, down to the glacier below.” The alarm last night and the discovery of the body this afternoon.
«The accident occurred yesterday, at the end of the day. However, his climbing partner was only able to raise the alarm during the night, after he managed to reach the Conscrits refuge. He was not injured, but in shock”, explains the spokesperson of the French gendarmes-rescuers.
“We started the searches – he adds – already during the night, but we only spotted some clues.” Then the helicopter operations continued for hours, until the body was found, which was then recovered. Furthermore, yesterday, two hikers died in Haute-Savoie (France), not far from the Mont Blanc massif, after falling about 50 meters into a steep canal, in the municipality of Servoz.
