In Brazil, the Marubo Indians went online for the first time and got hooked on porn.
In Brazil, the Marubo Indians gained access to the Internet thanks to Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite system and became addicted to social networks and porn. About it writes The New York Times.
In 2023, about two thousand people of the Marubo tribe, living along the banks of the Itui River, gained access to the Internet for the first time. At first, the new technology brought only benefits to the Indians: it became possible to quickly get in touch with relatives, call rescuers in an emergency, and so on. However, the elders soon noticed that the Internet began to corrupt people. “It has changed our lives so much that it has become harmful. Here, if you don’t hunt, fish or grow something, then you don’t eat,” said Alfredo Marubo.
According to the leaders, people became lazy and started spending hours on social networks instead of working. In addition, many young Marubo have become addicted to pornography, leading to an increase in explicit sexual behavior in a culture where even kissing in public was previously considered unacceptable.

Social networks have increased the social distance between people, and many Indians have stopped communicating with relatives in person. People began spreading false rumors about each other in general chats, and some marubo faced online bullying and became victims of online scammers. “Things are getting worse. Young people have become lazy because of the Internet. They are learning the way of life of white people,” lamented 73-year-old elder Tsainama Marubo.
The New York Times notes that this effect is most likely due to the fact that Indians, unlike urban residents, immediately gained access to the developed modern Internet with all its dangers. Most citizens observed the development of these technologies in the process and learned to filter harmful information.
As a result, the Marubo elders decided to limit the tribe’s access to Starlink. Now you can use the Internet for two hours in the morning and five hours in the afternoon. Free access is allowed only on Sundays. This is a temporary measure, which, according to the leaders, will help the Indians gradually master the new technology, without breaking away from the reality of life in the jungle.
In 2022, it was reported that a hermit from Japan, forcibly returned to civilization, won the right to move back to his island for the sake of freedom and walking naked. Masafumi Nagasaki lived on the uninhabited island of Sotopanari in the Ryukyu Archipelago since 1989, but after falling ill he was moved to a nursing home.
