The number of victims in road accidents with trams in Kemerovo exceeded 100 people
In Kemerovo, two trams collided with each other at high speed – one of them rammed the other. Emergency services report 102 casualties.
Doctors were unable to save one of the victims; two more are in the intensive care unit in serious condition.
Trams collided on the morning of June 6
There were a lot of people in both vehicles – they were going to work. First tram went down from a steep section of the road and picked up high speed – at that moment the vehicle’s brakes failed and it crashed into a tram that had already covered this section of the track.
The place where the tragedy occurred is considered an area with “special traffic conditions” due to the high degree of slope.
The impact was so strong that the tram’s cabin with failed brakes was flattened, and the driver received multiple fractures. In addition, two people fell from a tram rushing down a slope while it was moving – they ended up on the roadway and almost fell under the wheels of cars.
The victims climbed out through the windows
The damage sustained by the colliding trams was so extensive that passengers had to get out of the transport through the windows – the doors were broken. The surviving passengers helped those who were injured.
According to the latest data, more than 100 people were injured in the accident. Doctors were unable to save one of them; two more people remain in the intensive care unit in serious condition, however, as stated by the Minister of Health of the Kemerovo Region, Dmitry Beglov, their lives are not in danger.
Four days before the tragedy, the tram was undergoing maintenance
The Kemerovo electric transport company reported that the last maintenance was carried out by a vehicle with failed brakes on June 2. It is known that maintenance belonged to the second type, which involves a more detailed study of the condition of the vehicle and large-scale work to correct faults if they are detected. As a result, after maintenance, the tram was allowed to operate on the line, and on the day of the accident it managed to make one trip.
It is known that the tram was driven by a girl who got a job in a transport company in 2023. The tram itself rolled off the production line more than ten years ago.
According to preliminary data, the cause of the tragedy could have been a technical malfunction or human factor. A representative of the transport company said that technical problems can occur at any time, even after recently completed maintenance.
The regional prosecutor’s office began an investigation into the accident and took to monitor the progress of the investigation into the provision of services that do not meet safety requirements.
This is not the first tram tragedy
June 26, 1995 similar accident happened in Nizhny Novgorod – then the brakes of one of the city trams also failed during the ascent, and in addition, the vehicle was de-energized. The driver managed to give the passengers the command to jump out of the tram, which was rolling at speed, but despite this, dozens of people were injured, and doctors were unable to save four.
In December 2023, another accident with a tram occurred in Nizhny Novgorod. He rolled down the slope at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour, but no one was injured.
In addition, a similar tragedy occurred in Ukraine in the city of Kamenskoye in 1996. The accident happened during rush hour, when there were more than 150 people in the vehicle, 100 passengers were injured, and 34 people became victims of the accident.
