To overcome this problem, Renfe decided to place travelers whose trains began or ended their journey in Puerta de Atocha on a Cercanías shuttle service to Madrid Chamartín, the station from which they would continue their destination.
Atocha, paralyzed
However, minutes later traffic became even more complicated on the Madrid railway network. Around 7:30 p.m., Renfe reported the suspension of traffic to and from Atocha due to the presence of a person on one of the walkways outside the station who threatened to jump onto the tracks. The situation has forced the voltage to be cut throughout the station, “activating the emergency protocol prevalent in these cases,” said Renfe.
“The AVO, Avlo and Avant trains with origin and destination Puerta de Atocha and also the commuter lines C3, C4, C5 and C7 are affected,” the railway operator reported in a statement.
Meanwhile, on social networks, hundreds of affected users shared images of Cercanías trains completely turned off, stopped on the tracks, and of the crowded Atocha station lobby. According to eyewitnesses
