In the study, presented at the 17th International Conference on Endothelin, the researchers said that “large amounts of sodium disrupt the circadian rhythm of mice.”
The team, who conducted the study, fed a group of mice a diet high in sodium to study the effects on sleep.
He found that a high-sodium diet affected the mice’s normal circadian rhythm, and their brain activity was “high” at night.
“Although lab studies in mice do not always translate to humans, they are often used because they (mice) are human genetic models,” said Women’s World.
In this regard, Mike Dow, PhD, in psychiatry, stated that the findings were “supported by other known facts about sleep health.”
“Research has found that a diet high in salt disrupts our sleep, as it narrows the blood vessels and makes the heart pump blood faster. Of course, this is not desirable at night, because we need our bodies to be at rest.”
