Today, an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck Morobe Province, north of Papua New Guinea. The US Geological Survey reported that the epicenter of the earthquake occurred 39 kilometers from the Finschhafen area, and at a depth of 101.5 kilometers.
There have been no reports yet of any human or material losses resulting from the earthquake. Papua New Guinea is located in the Ring of Fire region, which extends along the coast of the Pacific Ocean, and is characterized by high earthquake and volcanic activity, and includes 90% of the active volcanoes in the world.
