A stream of the periphery of Buenos Aires is dyed in intense red

The Sarandí stream, which runs along the southern periphery of the capital of Argentina and flows into the Río de la Plata, stained this Red Thursday, without the cause of the causes, although some neighbors award it to industrial waste.

The water course is going through the town of Sarandí, in the municipality of Avellaneda, and in part of its banks there is an ecological reserve but also numerous homes.

The stream appeared on Thursday dyed of an intense red color, which worried the residents of the area, fearful of the possible discharge of water polluting agents.

The locals have also felt a nauseabundo smell, although aromas of this type are usual in the area, according to the neighbors.

“My husband left our house and told me that everything was red. While it is red, other times it was yellow, with an acid smell that makes us bad even in the throat. I live one block from the stream. Today, smell does not have. There are not many factories in the area, although deposits, ”said Silvia, a neighbor of the area in statements to the Argentine C5N media.

The municipal authorities of Avellaneda and the Ministry of Environment of the Province of Buenos Aires took water samples to submit them to analysis, but for now it is unknown what has caused the red coloration.

The Regional Environment Directorate said it is investigating what happened. “On the morning of Thursday, February 6, we received a report that the waters of the Sarandí Canal had dyed red,” he said in a statement. “We send our mobile analysis laboratory to the area and take two liters of water as a sample to perform a basic chemical analysis and liquid chromatography in order to determine which organic substance was responsible for discoloration. It is believed that it is some type of organic dye. ”

An AFP journalist said the color of the waters had vanished towards Thursday afternoon.
