Imagine you are calm in your home when, suddenly, an unidentified object falls from the sky and breaks through the roof! This is exactly what happened to Alejandro Otero, a resident of Naples, Florida, who experienced an adventure worthy of a Jules Verne novel.
The March 18, 2024, Alejandro launched an appeal on social media asking for help in contacting NASA. He wanted to understand what that “mysterious” object was that, falling from the sky, had created quite a bit of havoc in his house, almost hitting his son. And when I say “disruption”, I mean an object that literally went through two floors of the house!
After some decent suspense of a thrillerNASA shed light on the mystery: that object it was a piece of debris spacespecifically, an old battery EP–9 which had been discarded by International Space Station In the far 2021. Who would have thought that a battery could go on such an adventurous journey and end up in someone's house?
But here's the kicker: these batteries were meant to burn when returning in the Earth's atmosphere, at least according to official projections. Yet, against all odds, at least one of them made a rather unusual landing, directly on the roof of Otero!
Space visit: from the remains of Skylab to the Dragon capsule
This isn't the first time pieces of space hardware have made unexpected visits to humans. From the Dragon capsule by SpaceX which ended its journey in a sheep field in Australia, to the remains of the Skylab which surprised Western Australia in 1979the sky continues to give us surprises.
The story of Alejandro opens up an interesting debate: in an era where space traffic is becoming increasingly intense, how can we guarantee the safety of those living on Earth? And most importantly, who is responsible when this space debris they cause damage?
And you, how would you react if a piece of space decided to pay you a surprise visit?
