Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Wednesday that attempts to punish a nuclear power like Russia could endanger humanity.
Medvedev, who is now deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, said attempts to use courts or tribunals against Russia would be futile and threaten global devastation.
“The idea of punishing a country with one of the greatest nuclear capabilities is ridiculous,” Medvedev added on the Telegram app. “And potentially a threat to the very existence of humanity.”
Russia and the United States control about 90 percent of the world’s nuclear warheads, with each having about 4,000 warheads in their stockpiles, according to the Federation of American Scientists.
Medvedev held the presidency of Russia from 2008 to 2012.
Relations between Russia and the West have experienced ups and downs since the current Ukrainian crisis.
