The deputy of the Regional Assembly of Podemos Víctor Egio has accompanied this morning a group of young people from the Rebeldía collective affected by the non-payment of the Young Rental Bonus, who have burst into the presentation of the Reside Murcia housing fair. Some of these young people have been waiting for up to two years for bonus aid in the face of delays from the Murcia Ministry of Development.
Egio recalled that, of the more than nine million granted by the Government of Spain, the regional Executive “has not paid even 50% and has denied two out of every three requests.” This will mean that “a significant part of the aid granted by the central government will have to be returned.”
Young activists have launched proclamations against real estate speculation at this event that brings together the most important developers in the Region. Shouting “Speculators!” and “It’s not a business, it’s a right!” They have interrupted the intervention of the Murcian Minister of Public Works, Jorge García Montoro. They have then been evicted. Egio, who appeared in the room dressed as a tailcoat collector to demand payment of aid, denounced the “excessive use of force” by the event’s security against “some young people who were only demanding their rights.”
On the other hand, the purple spokesperson has assured that “this aid is not going to solve the problem, but it is a relief for some young people.” According to Egio, “what is needed is to build public housing and limit rental prices”, strategies that Podemos has been demanding for some time.
In this sense, the purple formation has registered in the Regional Assembly a motion that includes the payment of the youth rent bonus with late payment interest, the publication of a calendar with payment terms, favoring the construction of public housing on public land, avoiding that these houses could be discontinued or define social rent, a figure that in the Region “still does not have legal protection.”
Promotion makes Egio’s actions ugly
“It is regrettable that a regional deputy is dedicated to destroying an event organized by an organization,” the Department of Development and Infrastructure of the Region of Murcia has denounced. The Community has denied Egio’s claims. They have assured that the Executive has granted “all the aid for the applications that meet the requirements and amount to nine million euros, and paid all those that have been justified as totaling more than 4.5 million euros”: “As they go justifying the monthly rent payments, the subsidies are paid. In other words, aid cannot be paid for the months that have not yet been paid by tenants, because this is established in the state regulation of these subsidies,” they explained.
“If the rest of the young applicants cannot qualify for this aid, it is because they do not meet the requirements imposed solely and exclusively by the socialist Government. Only 3.65 out of every 10 of the applications submitted meet the requirements of the call unilaterally designed by the Ministry,” they argued.
