An Italian nun was killed in an attack on a mission in northeastern Mozambique, which has been witness to terrorist violence for nearly five years.
The Sisters of Comboni said in a statement that Sister Maria de Copé was killed by terrorists who attacked the mission on Tuesday evening.
The mission is located in the diocese of Nacala, the coastal city in the northeast of the country near Cabo Delgado, where extremist terrorist groups carry out acts of violence.
The officials added that the attackers “destroyed and set fire to the church, the nuns’ residence, the hospital and mission vehicles.”
Two other nuns, an Italian and a Spanish, managed to escape and hid in the woods” with a group of girls.
According to the Italian press, 80-year-old Maria de Cope has been in Mozambique since the 1960s. The mission was sheltering people who had fled their homes due to terrorist attacks in the country.
The violence has killed nearly 4,000 people since October 2017, according to Acled, a non-governmental organization that collects data in conflict zones, and caused 820,000 people to flee.
