National Police Agents Three people have been arrested in Algeciras (Cádiz)and they are investigating a fourth. These would be the alleged perpetrators of charges of between 300 and 500 euros for carrying out fictitious registrationsthereby facilitating the obtaining of residence and work permits for foreigners. They are charged with crimes of falsifying documents and promoting irregular immigration.
As explained by the National Police in a note, the police investigation, which began in April 2024, focused on a increase in suspicious registrations in city homes. Thus, in one of them, a house in ruins in the La Bajadilla neighborhood, was listed as residence for 15 peoplethe majority of foreign nationality, who lacked work, social or emotional ties in the city.
The agents verified that at least 13 of these people had never resided at said address and had paid up to 500 euros to obtain a registration that they would later use as a basis to process residence and work permits.
The investigation revealed that two of those arrested acted as intermediaries between the interested parties and the owners of the homes. Initial contacts were made in city cafeswhere, after receiving the agreed money, the necessary documentation was delivered to formalize the registration at the Algeciras Municipal Register Office.
As a result of the police actions, three people involved were arrested and the Municipal Registry was urged to report lowers registered people fraudulently.
The National Police has stressed that these fraudulent practices are used by people in an irregular situation to comply with the requirement to remain in Spain. However, these actions constitute serious violations of the Immigration Law, which can be punished with fines of between 501 and 10,000 euros. In the most serious cases, the people involved could face prison sentences of up to three years, as established by the Penal Code.
