Many patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes seek to control the level of sugar in the blood, and some natural compounds help contribute to the process of controlling sugar in addition to the appropriate treatment.
Studies have revealed that taking cinnamon as a supplement can have an adjunct effect in lowering blood sugar. As part of a study in Diabetes Care, 30 participants with type 2 diabetes took a cinnamon supplement for 40 days, while another 30 participants with diabetes took a cinnamon supplement for 40 days. At the end of the study, all participants who took the cinnamon supplement showed lower blood sugar levels, while those who took the placebo didn’t notice any change.
The study showed that participants who took cinnamon for 40 days experienced a decrease in the level of glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood.
The study concluded that adding cinnamon to the diet would help “reduce risk factors for diabetes”, as well as risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
A different study from Istanbul University Medipol Institute of Health Sciences found similar results. Regular consumption of three to six grams of cinnamon per day positively affects blood sugar levels. The survey recommends regular consumption of cinnamon or cinnamon supplements.
Cinnamon has also been shown to lower levels of oxidative stress, a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, as well as many other conditions, according to a study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.
Cinnamon supplements are not a substitute for diabetes medications, nor do they replace a healthy diet and regular exercise, according to the American Diabetes Association.
High blood sugar most affects people diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, and it can damage nerves, blood vessels and organs.
High blood sugar has many causes, including stress, other illnesses, lack of exercise, eating too many carbohydrates, or forgetting to take insulin for patients.
