The graduate program has also attracted criticism for some of its contents
The Nova University of Lisbon has suspended a postgraduate program on racism and xenophobia due to criticism among human rights defense groups for hiring only white teachers.
The Nova University Law School course, promoted by the Observatory of Racism and Xenophobia and backed by the Government, has also been criticized for some of its content, including a session titled ‘Does racism really exist?’.
«It is absurd to have a graduate course on racism and xenophobia coordinated entirely by white people and, until now, taught without a single non-white person», wrote Paula Cardoso, founder of the online network for black professionals in Portugal Afrolink, on the organization’s website.
For its part, the Portuguese platform against racism Kilombo has stated on Facebook that it was “absolutely incomprehensible” that a white person did not question the absence of blacks on the faculty of a graduate course on racism.
Following the backlash, the University has removed the program announcement from its website. Margarida Lima Rego, dean of the Faculty of Law, has stated that the Faculty tried to hire professors from diverse backgrounds, but some were not available.
