This new incident, the nth that occurs in this hot zone of drug trafficking, coincides with the dissemination of 2024 results of the Special Security Plan of the Gibraltar field. According to the Ministry of Interior, the National Police and Civil Guard units that operate under the guidelines of the Special Plan promoted for 2024 a total of 12,068 operations against organizations that are dedicated to drug trafficking and smuggling in the six Andalusian provinces in which said operation is deployed. In total there were 5,911 detainees and 264,572 kilos of drugs seized.
These 12,068 police operations against drug trafficking in 2024 are 3,629 more than during the previous year, 43 percent more. Of those deployed last year, 11,391 hit networks dedicated to drug trafficking and smuggling (44.7 percent more than the previous year), while another 677 focused on the Lighting infrastructure of the benefits obtained by these networks or logistic support (19 percent more than in 2023).
In 2024, in those six Andalusian provinces, 5,911 arrests were made for crimes of drug trafficking and smuggling (3.79 percent less than the previous year), which represent 6.8 percent of the total of those arrested that year in those territories . As for the apprehended drug, it amounts to 264,572 kilos: 150,802 of hashish, 44,206 of cocaine and 69,564 of marijuana and other substances.
These figures confirm a sustained decrease in hashish seizures since 2021, the year in which a maximum of 523,696 kilograms was reached. Police experts attribute this fall to the Decreased production in Morocco As a consequence of the drought of 2022 and the risk of risk by drug trafficking networks, which transport less amount on each trip and deviate drug trafficking routes to other geographical areas to avoid police pressure in southern Spain.
