British middleweight boxer Sherif Lawal died yesterday, Sunday, after collapsing in the ring during his first professional fight. The British Boxing Council issued a condolence note on Monday after the fight organizers announced the news of the boxer’s death at the age of 29.
Media reports stated that Lawal injured his temple during the fourth round of six scheduled rounds in his fight against Portuguese Malam Varela at the Harrow Entertainment Center in London.
The company (Warren Boxing Management), which promoted the fight, said in a statement, “Unfortunately, Sharif collapsed during the fight, and despite the first responders’ best efforts, he died.” The fight was the first in an event that was decided to be cancelled.
