Second deadly fire so far this weekend in the Community of Madrid. A 48-year-old man died early this Sunday in the fire in his home in Alcalá de Henareswhich joins another 77-year-old man who lost his life on Saturday when the mattress he was sleeping on caught fire due to a candle lit in his apartment in Leganés.
The fire in Alcalá de Henares occurred in a house on the first floor at number 2 Turina Street, a four-story building plus a ground floor. As reported to this newspaper by a spokesperson for 112 Emergencies Community of Madrid, the first warning call occurred around five in the morning this Saturday, but “it is possible that the fire had started much earlier.”
The origin of the flames was in the kitchen. Upon the arrival of the firefighters, who sent seven crews, they found “the fire was very developed” and was already affecting the kitchen and the entrance hall, while the smoke had spread to all the rooms. This hall “was covered in wood,” which helped the flames spread.
On the floor of the hallway, where he had collapsed, probably trying to flee, was the victim, a 48-year-old man who was alone in the house, although more people lived there. “The firefighters rescued him quickly, he was unconscious and in cardiorespiratory arrest,” so these troops, with the help of the Red Cross, “have begun resuscitation maneuvers,” which the Summa 112 paramedics continue upon their arrival.
However, after more than half an hour, they had to confirm his death, in principle not from burns but from abundant smoke inhalation. The Summa “has not had to serve any more neighbors” and some of the neighbors have been evicted and others confined to their homes, since there was a lot of smoke in the stairwell.
