An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 on the Richter scale shook the New York metropolitan area around 10:20 a.m. this Friday – six hours more in Spain – with no casualties or significant damage reported, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The epicenter was located in the Lebanon area, New Jersey, about eighty kilometers from the center of Manhattan. The tremor was also felt in the area between Philadelphia and Boston. Several airports on the East Coast issued alerts to stop air traffic, but flights resumed quickly.

The Police Department carried out an urgent deployment that filled the city with the sound of sirens, but, as the mayor, Eric Adams, explained, there were hardly any incidents worth mentioning. “We do not have any reports of major impacts at this time, but we are still evaluating the consequences,” his press service wrote on social media.
