Several regions of northern and southern Italy are on high alert for heavy rain and flooding. One person died on Sunday in Italy after heavy rains again partially flooded the Emilia-Romagna region in the north of the country. The officers reported having found the body of a missing person south of the city of Bologna. Local media stated that it was a 20-year-old young man, whose car was swept away by the water.
Regional authorities reported that about 175 millimeters of rain fell in one day in Bologna and its surroundings, when the historical average for the month of October is 70.
The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, “is closely monitoring the consequences of the bad weather,” and is in “constant contact” with the Civil Protection authorities, her office reported.
The region had already suffered the consequences of Storm Boris in September, with significant flooding. The Bologna city council announced that schools will remain closed on Monday. More than 2,100 people were evacuated and about 15,000 were left without power early Sunday morning. Some 4,000 people were still without electricity in the afternoon, regional authorities detailed.
Bologna and four nearby provinces have been declared on “red alert” until midnight Sunday. The authorities warned of the risk of landslides in mountainous areas.
According to experts, climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions generated by human activities is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as torrential rains and floods.
