Roskomnadzor blocked the website of the OVD-Info media project (included in the register of foreign agents) in the Russian Federation by the decision of the Moscow Region court, which considered that the organization’s activities were aimed at promoting terrorism and extremism. This was announced on Saturday, December 25, at the press service of the department.
It is noted that according to the text of the court decision, the information of the media project aimed at justifying the activities of extremist and terrorist associations is recognized as prohibited.
It is specified that, taking into account the above, the activities of the media project are aimed at promoting terrorism and extremism on the territory of the Russian Federation.
The department also noted that the administrations of social networks were sent requirements to delete the accounts of the organization. Also, Roskomnadzor explained that access to the resource on the territory of the country is limited.
On December 20, the OVD-Info website was included in the list of Internet resources containing information, the dissemination of which is prohibited in Russia, and access to it is restricted.
On September 29, the Ministry of Justice included OVD-Info in the register of unregistered foreign agent associations. It was noted that this was done in compliance with the requirements of the current legislation.
In October, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that there is no “mass enrollment” in foreign agents in the country, the danger of this is greatly exaggerated. According to him, some criteria of the law on foreign agents need to be re-analyzed.
In turn, the presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov emphasized that the expansion of the list of foreign media outlets in Russia does not pose a threat to freedom of speech. He also stated that this law is in force in Russia to protect against outside interference.
Prior to that, on August 27, Peskov said that the law on foreign media agents is in effect in the Russian Federation to protect against external interference.
