Murcia, Alhama, Archena, Aledo and Villanueva del Segura will help university students who are in a situation of social vulnerability
. The municipalities of Aledo, Alhama de Murcia, Archena, Murcia and Villanueva del Río de Segura have committed to making an economic contribution to pay the tuition fees of those undergraduate, master and doctoral students of the University of Murcia (UMU) who are in a situation of social or economic vulnerability, UMU sources reported.
This collaboration is processed through sponsorship contracts or agreements with the UMU Social Care Office. In this way, these localities adhere to the Social Care Office, a UMU service with which the Beniel, Ceutí, Lorquí and Santomera consistories already collaborate, for which there are already 9 city councils in the Region committed to this new university service.
These grants are in addition to the donation of 6,000 euros from the Association of Former Students and Friends of the University of Murcia (A4), 3,240 from the Lyons Club Murcia association and 30,000 euros from the Fundación la Caixa and CaixaBank , as well as the amounts donated by the workers and the different departments of the UMU.
First call
The UMU Social Care Office has already made the first call for the next academic year 2021-22, for a total amount of 50,000 euros. The subsidies are aimed at students who have been excluded from ministerial scholarships and from the scholarship plan to continue their studies at UMU. The socio-economic situation weighs up to 30% in the scale used to distribute the scholarships, and will be resolved in 2022.
From this service, a pioneer in the Spanish university, they recall that “for those interested in making a contribution, the donation of 100 euros generates an automatic deduction in personal income tax of 80 euros, which really means a contribution of 20 euros.”
The director of the Office of Social Attention, José Ángel Martínez, appreciates “the involvement and commitment of the mayors and councilors of these consistories with the student body, and surely it will serve so that the majority of municipal corporations commit themselves not to leave no student behind, creating a solidarity and committed project between public administrations, from institutional coordination and collaboration. At the same time, he clarified that “these municipal grants are all destined for a common piggy bank, since they will be distributed among the student body.”
