WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The US Supreme Court is due Wednesday to consider whether to reverse its position on the country’s abortion rights as it studies Mississippi’s initiative to overturn the historic 1973 Roe v Wade verdict that legalized the procedure in national scope.
The court, which has a conservative majority of 6 to 3, was supposed to hear as of 10 am local time at least 70 minutes of oral arguments from the southern state’s appeal to reinstate its ban on abortion from the 15th week of pregnancy. Lower bodies rejected the Republican support bill.
Mississippi’s only abortion clinic, the Jackson Women’s Health Organization has challenged the law and is backed by the government of Democratic President Joe Biden. A decision is expected by the end of June 2022.
The Roe v Wade verdict recognizes that the right to personal privacy enshrined in the US Constitution protects a woman’s ability to terminate a pregnancy. A 1992 Supreme Court decision entitled Planned Parenthood of Southern Pennsylvania v. Casey reaffirmed abortion rights and banned laws that place an “undue burden” on access to the practice.
Anti-abortion activists believe they are closer than ever to a reversal of the Roe v Wade opinion, a long-standing goal of conservative Christians in the United States.
Mississippi’s legislation is part of a string of restrictive abortion laws passed in Republican-ruled states in recent years.
