Last month Misano was the scene of Pecco Bagnaia’s masterpiece, but one month later the MotoGP returns to the track dedicated to Marco Simoncelli with different conditions: Fabio Quartararo arrives at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix with the first match point and could to be crowned world champion already on Sunday. The world leader arrives at the last stage in Italy of this season with a 52-point advantage over Bagnaia, winner of the last race in Misano.
Despite the great opportunity presented to him, the Yamaha rider does not focus too much on the world championship: “I feel very good, I must say that honestly I am not focusing on the championship and on the possibility of becoming champion here, also because we know that on Sunday anything can happen. At the moment, however, I want to plan everything as if it were the beginning of the season, at least for Friday and Saturday. Then on Sunday we will see how many risks we can take ”.
Speaking of risks, if we think of Misano, the duel with Pecco Bagnaia immediately comes to mind, then won by the latter who found his second world success. On that occasion Quartararo had folded to the Ducati rider and on the same track the opportunity to fight could arise again. However, the situation in the championship of the Frenchman is different and he has already declared that he wants to use more intelligence: “I don’t know if we will take risks, we will see. This is how I like to compete, I hadn’t been in this situation before. Last year I learned not so much how to fight for a championship, but having been the leader for a few races was important for me to gain experience. So this year is a little easier, but we’ll see. It’s a race like any other and then we’ll see if I can take risks on Sunday ”.
There are now three races to go until the end of this season and in Misano Quartararo can close the games. But it is inevitable to take a look at what 2022 will be, with a very dense calendar that includes 21 appointments. We will return out of Europe constantly and slowly it seems that we are returning to normal, after the upheavals of the last two seasons. However, the world leader and many other drivers believe that 21 is the maximum number of races to run, to avoid making the season exhausting.
“I think it will be fantastic – Quartararo says in reference to the 2022 calendar – I like to ride and go to different places, it’s a bit strange to be back on the same track, but we know that with this situation it was difficult to leave Europe and have more variety in the calendar. But this is a step to get back to normal and I want to try new circuits, like Indonesia. I also hope that this calendar will never change. But I think we shouldn’t go beyond 22 races, it starts to be too much. We must consider that we have to move and so it becomes really long “.
The MotoGP riders, as we know, are called to set a good example to the younger boys and we arrive at Misano veterans of the harsh penalty inflicted on Deniz Oncu for the accident caused in Austin three weeks ago. In terms of sanctions and safety, there is a lot of fighting to avoid the tragedies and the disqualification inflicted on the Turkish driver represents for Quartararo a right way to start educating the youngest.
“This year was difficult for motorcycling – recalls the transalpine rider – we lost three guys in the lighter categories. The last accident was terrible, nothing was done on purpose, we said it from the beginning. But now we really need to totally change. It’s a shame for Oncu, who is the first rider to have received this big penalty, but I think these penalties are necessary to make sure that these things don’t happen again. It wasn’t nice to see the accident, but the most important thing is that no one was hurt ”.
