GUIDE GUIDANCE: What mobile manufacturer can you allow the luxury of launching a model whose basic version costs 709 euros and saying that it is cheap, although it only has one camera and several featured benefits? Has anyone said Apple? Yes, indeed, it is Apple, and the phone in question is its new iPhone 16E.
Several years ago, the apple signature did not put in the market an ‘economic’ version of what it is, despite the one weigh, the most desired smartphone in the world. The last iPhone se, in fact, went on sale in 2022, and since then Apple had not returned to present a ‘low cost’ model. Until now.
A expensive terminal for what it offers
Before starting with the analysis of the new terminal, confession is necessary: and we face him with some prejudices. Its price, from 709 euros, seemed too high for what the terminal offers. Any Android, for the same money, has, on paper, characteristics and much higher benefits. In addition to the fact that, for 250 euros, we can have an entire iPhone 16, with its double camera, its 5 -core GPU instead of four, its new side chamber control button (which the 16E does not have), its latest generation image effects, its dynamic island (instead of returning to the ‘notch’), its brightness of up to 2,000 Nits and its Magsafe magnetic technology.
With those reservations, we start the test of the new iPhone 16E, using it as the main telephone for several weeks. And, to be honest, the result was unexpected, even surprising.
A simplified version of his ‘older brother’
Yes, there is no doubt that the new 16E is a simplified version of its ‘older brother’, the iPhone 16. But it is also true that it retains the immense most of the characteristics they make of the iPhone, be the model that is, a telephone different from the others. In other words, it can be said that the sum of its parts makes the new Apple model surprisingly faithful to the essence of the brand, much more than what would be expected of a simple cut version.
Resistant and durable
The 16E iPhone inherits the elegant and minimalist design of previous versions, with a rear of resistant glass and a fairly thick aluminum frame, the truth, but that feels solid in the hand. Made of 85% recycled aluminum, the new terminal is available in matte black and white. The 6.1 -inch Super Retina XDR screen, with OLED technology, is the same as that of the iPhone 16, although with a slightly lower brightness (1,200 nits instead of the 1,600 of the iPhone 16, which also arrives, outdoors, a peak of 2,000 nits).
The visualization of any type of content is excellent, at the height of most other latest generation terminals. Which is possible more than by the characteristics, which are at an intermediate level with respect to many of its competitors, thanks to the excellent Apple calibration, which achieves vibrant and deep black colors. The IP68 resistance to dust and splashes guarantees that the device can be immersed without problem to depths of 6 meters and for 30 minutes. In our tests, the terminal had no problem recording underwater videos. Another point against: The update rate remains at 60 Hz, something difficult to understand in a world where even the entrance terminals have already passed at 120 Hz.
Power for everyone
The heart of the iPhone 16E is the A18 chip, the same processor that drives the iPhone 16 although, as we have said, it has a four -core GPU instead of the 5 D the iPhone 16. Together, this latest generation chip offers exceptional performance in all tasks, from web navigation and multitasking to the most demanding games and artificial intelligence functions. We had up to 40 applications open at the same time without any of them being resented for it. The 6 -core CPU and the 4 -core GPU work together to offer a fluid and interruption experience. The 16 -core Neural Engine, optimized for automatic learning and supported by 8 GB of RAM, allows the 16E to execute complex IA tasks with speed and efficiency. Something that, however, we still cannot enjoy in Spain, since the Apple Intelligence will not reach our country until spring.
It should be noted, in this section, the excellent connectivity of the new terminal, which opens for the first time the new modem C1 of Apple. In our tests, we managed to have coverage, although not always, in places where other iPhone do not have, such as garages, basements and elevators.
Chamber: Lights and Shadows
One of the most distinctive (and controversial) features of the 16E iPhone is its unique camera system, something that is no longer seen in the mid -range. Surely it has been here where the firm has been able to save more to be able to adjust the price. Unlike the iPhone 16, which has two rear cameras, the 16E has a single 48 MP fusion camera and lacks a wide angle. The firm sells it as a ‘supercamrara’ that is worth two, but that is not entirely true.
The trick, in fact, consists of using as the main sensor the ultra wide angle of the iPhone 16 Pro. A much smaller and limited sensor, but capable of behaving with dignity in different situations. In fact, and despite its loneliness, this unique chamber has managed to exceed our expectations and has proven to be able to capture impressive images with a much more than acceptable level of detail and clarity. We stay, however, without the possibility of taking macro photos or space photo.
The key to this unexpected quality is in Apple’s computational photography, which combined with the powerful chip A18 allows you to obtain surprising results in various lighting conditions. The integrated optical quality teleobjective X2 offers the flexibility of an optical zoom without the need for a second physical camera. But are the photos at the height of what other iPhone do? Of course not, especially in little enlightened environments, where less sharpness is achieved, or in moving images, but the differences remain for the most expert eyes. In general, any photography taken by day and with good light will have nothing to envy to that of their older brothers, and will be more than enough for the vast majority of users. An unexpected point, then, for the camera.
As regards the video, say that we can record, as in the iPhone 16, in 4K to 24, 25, 30 0 60 images per second with Dolby Vision, but we lose the cinema mode and the possibility of recording macro videos, something that the iPhone 16 makes even in slow motion.
The Selfie Chamber, on the other hand, is exactly the same as in the iPhone 16, with a 12 megapixel sensor that gives excellent results practically in any light condition. In this section there have been no cuts.
Autonomy, the strong point
The 16E iPhone battery is undoubtedly one of its strongest points. The space that Apple has saved with the cameras, in effect, has allowed it to set up a battery of almost 4,000 milliamps (exactly 3,961 milliamperia) compared to the 3,561 of the iPhone 16. According to Apple, the 16E can play video for 26 uninterrupted and audio hours up to 80 hours, more than 22 and 80 hours of the iPhone 16 in the same tasks. However, in our tests we have not achieved so much difference. What is true is that the 16E can accompany us without problem throughout the day without recharge.
It also has a fast charging system of 20 W capable of filling 50% battery in approximately 30 minutes. It is not the latest in this field, but that generally happens with all iPhone
An iPhone for everyone?
In short, the new 16E cannot deny that it is a real iPhone, and offers an experience of fluid, satisfactory and very Apple use. The inevitable cuts manage to save some of the most characteristic aspects of the brand while trying to minimize the losses, that there are, but not in the sections (power, battery, solvency, elegance) that most matter to users, which can thus access an entire iPhone from 709 euros.
However, there is a question of whether it is worth spending a little more (250 euros more) and having an iPhone 16 with all its benefits. Or even opt for a previous pro model, such as the iPhone 15 Pro, which also supports Apple Intelligence and that in Amazon can be found for just under 800 euros. That, in any case, is an choice that each user will have to make.
There is no doubt that, three years later, Apple renews its commitment to offer avant -garde technology to a broader audience. With its powerful chip A18, its surprising unique chamber system, its excellent autonomy and its functions (when they arrive) of artificial intelligence, the 16E offers a reasonably complete and satisfactory iPhone experience at a more affordable price.
