Winter is beginning to feel strongly in Spain, and snow will be the protagonist in several provinces these days when the countdown to Christmas is already running out.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued important warnings highlighting areas where snowfall is expected. Below, we detail the forecasts and the most affected provinces.
After Wednesday’s day, in which the snow level dropped to 600 meters and left white marks in several areas of the northeast of the peninsula, we give way to a Thursday and a weekend in which, although the snow warnings They will not be repeated in large areas, the temperatures will be freezing.
On Thursday, the Catalan Pyrenees will be the main focus, with moderate accumulations from 1,300 meters. In addition, night temperatures will drop considerably, favoring widespread frosts in large areas of the interior.
Friday will be a key day for snowfall in Spain, especially in the area of Catalonia, where the Aemet has activated snow warnings:
Both areas have a moderate risk level, with a probability between 40% and 70%. These snowfalls will mainly affect during the early morning, although they could extend depending on the weather evolution.
Weekend: stability with strong frosts
The weekend will be marked by a predominance of anticyclonic weather in much of Spain, which will favor atmospheric stability, although there will be exceptions due to the influence of low pressure systems and winter conditions in mountainous areas.
On Saturday, the skies are expected to be slightly cloudy or with intervals of high clouds in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. During the first hours of the day, morning fogs and mists will be frequent in large areas of the interioralthough they will tend to dissipate as the day progresses.
In the Central System and the Pyrenees there could be light snowfalls, with a snow level that will range between 1,100 and 1,400 meters. In the Canary Islands, the arrival of a front associated with this low pressure system will bring abundant cloudiness and rainfall that could be intense in the western islands.
Weekly prediction:
On Monday, snowfall in high and mountain areas of the northern interior of the peninsula that will decrease throughout the day; persistent rains in the extreme north of the peninsula; weak in the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands.

As for temperatures, maximum temperatures will tend to increase slightly in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, except in the northeast, where they could decrease. The minimums will show a slight decrease in the extreme northwest and the Balearic Islandswhile light climbs will predominate in the rest.
Frost will remain in large areas of the northern half and mountainous areas, being especially intense in the peaks of the northern peninsula.
On Sunday the anticyclonic influence will continue, with skies remaining slightly cloudy or with intervals of high clouds in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. Also fog banks will persist mornings, especially in interior areas.
Chances of snow in several areas to close the week
Weak rains or occasional showers could occur in the eastern Cantabrian Sea, the upper Ebro, the northern Pyrenees, the southern Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands.

The elevation will be around 900/1100 m in the northwest and 1000/1400 m in the rest, rising to 1400/1800 m in the south of the peninsula.
In northern mountainous areas, precipitation could be in the form of snow, with a level that will range between 900 and 1,400 meters, especially in the Pyrenees. In the Canary Islands, the Atlantic storm will continue to affect the archipelago, leaving widespread rains, locally intense in the western islands.
Regarding the temperatures on Sunday, no major changes are expected in the Peninsulaalthough there could be a slight decrease in the maximums in the extreme north and an increase in the minimums.
