He has had a marathon day of promotion, granting interviews to numerous media outlets, and lunchtime has already passed, but he is still going strong: “It wasn’t that hard, really, I had a good time.” Quim Gutiérrez has been talking for hours about ‘To the other neighborhood’, a film that he defines as “a business comedy of absurdities in the suburbs” in which he plays Andrés, a posh businessman forced to move his company headquarters to a marginal neighborhood: “an unlikely encounter occurs between two worlds, each with its prejudices, and we see how the differences become an opportunity.” Although there is an undercurrent of social criticism, “humor allows the viewer, without realizing it, to enter into the mire.” Quim is delighted to have moved away from the “charming pushover” to play this “recalcitrant optimist who, when he finds himself up against a wall, invents anything to get out of it.”
Married to the model Paula Willems, he has been living in the countryside for some time, oblivious to the hustle and bustle of the city. In a town where his neighbors barely recognize him, he can indulge in one of his recent passions, ornithology. With his binoculars he spends the day ‘hunting’ for birds, the sighting being more than just fun. Quim has become a father for the second time, something for which he is already prepared: «with the first child you have a series of learnings that now become a toolbox. There are also things that you didn’t imagine before and now you assume, like all the concessions that you are going to have to make in your life. It is an advantage to know how to manage this situation.” Fatherhood has brought him closer to his family: «TOnow I understand better everything my parents did with me.»
The actor, Dior ambassador in Spain, defines himself as “a person who is just as happy at a luxurious dinner as he is with a pencil or planting a tree.” He wears it with pride, although he recognizes that, if he could, what he would change is his self-demand: “I am very demanding, very diligent, but I should understand that it’s okay to not be perfect. I would like to assume the possibility of error without further ado. He does not consider himself a dreamer: “I am a realist, I try to set a direction to go without losing contact with the present. “You cannot be oblivious to the present and what you dream must be there.”
His character is “a peaceful combination between nervousness and tranquility. There is a base that makes me nervous, energetic, but for mental health I compensate with elements of serenity.» To do this, Quim uses his own body: «on filming there are always tense moments and, between takes, I have learned to listen to my breathing. This is how I find peace. It relaxes me. It is an incredible tool. If you practice it, it is a great relief.” And Quim, who is a man of routines who achieves what he sets out to do, has practiced it a lot: “it’s true that I need them so that later, if I want, I can improvise. I do them because they work for me, but I have learned not to let them be a burden, you have to be flexible and adapt.”
The boy who played sports to integrate
At the age of twelve, driven by his interest in attracting attention, he went to a casting that would change his life: «I was a very normal child who liked to be like the monkey at the fair in front of the family. But he was not particularly rebellious, although he was very moved. “He was very responsible.” This is how he came to the series ‘Poblenou’, becoming a popular face: «it is difficult to manage fame at that age. I remember riding the bus and stopping in front of a school, hordes of kids blocking the way. That first approach to the world of acting ended with an escape: «I wanted to leave when I didn’t like the scripts and a clause in my contract allowed me to leave. I spent four years without wanting to know anything about that world. “It was hard, I liked to draw attention in a controlled way, on stage.” While filming, he discovered the world of adults: “I had a certain verbal ability that allowed me to appear somewhat more mature than I really was, which was confusing. Sometimes I found myself involved in situations that I didn’t understand. But it is true that this experience helps to mature. In addition, you discover what it means to be perceived by others and the consequences of feeling more observed.»
Before all that, Quim was just “a fanciful child, who preferred to get lost in his world than play soccer in the playground. Until my parents guided me to integrate with others through sports. “I had never experienced it as a problem, because I had my small group of friends who listened to me.”
If he could give that child some advice, Quim doesn’t hesitate for a moment: “to learn to say no. “I was too polite and I ate a lot of embers from people who I should have sent to fry asparagus.”
