ERC militancy forces a second vote after leaving Junqueras one step away from obtaining half of the support

ERC still cannot find the way out of the labyrinth in which it has been lost since last May. In the vote held this Saturday, within the framework of the party congress, none of the three candidates to preside over Esquerra have managed to obtain more than 50% of the votes, which means that the militancy will have to vote again between the first two, Oriol Junqueras and Xavier Godàs.

Junqueras was the candidate with the best result, with 48.3%. A clear victory but insufficient to be declared the winner. In fact, not resolving the situation this Saturday could be a problem especially for Junqueras, who aspired to overwhelm his competitors in the first round.

Xavier Godàs has obtained 35.3% of the votes for a candidacy protected by Marta Rovira and by a good part of the previous Government of Pere Aragonès. A result that allows him to go to a second round with options to surpass Junqueras. This vote will take place on Saturday, December 14.

This new consultation with the militancy will be a duel between Junqueras and Godàs, but the key could be the candidacy of Helena Solà, Foc Nou, who came third with 12.6% of the votes, but who could now join forces with another of the first.

Solà is, in principle, closer to Godàs, although it is expected that there will be a negotiation with both candidates to say who she supports. However, it turns out that the sum of the second and third votes falls behind what Junqueras obtained, thanks to a blank vote that reached 3.7%.

The division when it comes to choosing the leader in this congress contrasts with what happened just two years ago, when Junqueras and Rovira formed a tandem that was endorsed by 87% of the militancy, although then it closed with a much smaller participation.

The battle will remain open for at least two more weeks, but the three candidates are aware that, immediately after choosing the candidate, the time will come to try to mend a party that has opened its doors before this congress. The crossfire has been so intense, especially at the beginning of the race, that in recent months there have even been internal calls to avoid a schism.

Once the part of the leader election is over, the new ERC executive will have a period of two months to prepare a new political presentation, which must also be put to a vote around the month of February.

In the only candidate debate held this week, the three contenders were open to the idea that, whatever the result of the vote, they could all work together on the new ideological basis document. It will be the first opportunity for the winner to demonstrate his will to integrate minority sectors.
