Rebellion or Extinction (XR), AE-AGRÓ, Scientific Rebellion (RC) and related people have carried out an action to denounce the inaction on climate matters that has led to one of the worst climate catastrophes in our country.
Just after a month since the DANA and coinciding with the exact time in which the AEMET issued the red alert, at 7:31 in the morning, a group of activists has sounded the alarms to denounce the terrible management of the catastrophe by part of the Valencian Government and its total inaction in terms of prevention and mitigation of the climate crisis. For this reason, the group of people has sounded the alarm at the precise moment in which the Government should have initiated the emergency protocol to avoid any type of displacement and thus have saved lives.
The group of activists has displayed a banner with the motto: “Capitalism and its climate inaction kill”, at the fountain of the Water Tribunal (in the Plaza de la Virgen), in solidarity with the more than two hundred fatalities (human ) caused by the overflowing of the waters of the Túria, the Magro and the Poyo ravine.
The organizations denounce that the Generalitat Valenciana ignored science from the moment they agreed with climate deniers, the same ones who stop ambitious public policies to fight climate change, and who prioritize economic interests that destroy the territory, such as mass tourism and the construction of large infrastructures such as the Port of Valencia.
Issues as important as the elimination of the Valencian Emergency Unit by the Mazón Government, added to the poor management of the territory for decades, have made this DANA one of the worst climate tragedies that our country has suffered, on a human level. animal and environmental, seriously affecting both entire population centers and the ecosystem of the Albufera, the rice fields and countless crop fields.
For this reason, Extinction Rebellion, AE-AGRÓ, Scientific Rebellion and related people demand that measures be taken aimed at minimizing and adapting to climate change and the ecological and biodiversity crises, based on social justice and guided by the scientific consensus that is unanimous. given the urgency of action in the face of the ecosocial crisis.
The activists assure that “we are environmental activists, but also volunteers at ground zero, we are working class and we are directly affected by the consequences of this catastrophe.”
The convening groups demand the creation of permanent and binding Citizen Assemblies, that is, citizen committees that make decisions that affect the majority of the population, such as, in this case, climate change, committees that are already established in other countries. These Assemblies serve to inform and make decisions without corporate pressure and are spaces where a more participatory democracy than parliamentary democracy is practiced.
Esther, spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion Valencia, has concluded that “we demand the resignation of Carlos Mazón to make way for a government that acts in the face of scientific evidence instead of ignoring it. We need to put social well-being before corporate well-being, and focus on saving lives. Now and in the future.
