The Care City Lab is a new center specialized in care and research in the socio-health field in the city of Mataró. This innovative space arises within the strategic project Mataró, Caring City, with the main objective of offering solutions that improve the quality of life of people in situations of fragility and dependency, as well as those in charge of their care. The Minister of Social Rights, Mònica Martínez and the mayor of the city, David Bote, have inaugurated the facilities.
“It is a great day for the city,” said Mayor Bote, after trying for months to bring together companies, administrations, institutions and health centers in a common project. “It is the starting point of a city strategy that wants to take care of the aging of the population once, as in the rest of the cities, “the age pyramid has inverted”, with a decrease in the birth rate and an increase in older people.
“Care City Lab is an example to follow” that can be replicated in other cities and that combines what “we want from public services. with excellence to abort aging and prolong autonomy,” said the Minister of Social Rights, Mónica Martínez. “Putting the sector to work with innovation and adding knowledge is a success” to face the new reality of aging. “It is an example of what we want”, a space where we can advise caring families to adapt their homes to new devices and elements as simple as “being able to regulate the height of the cabinets or install a low-height dishwasher” to make the lives of dependent people easier.
Mataró has managed to combine efforts and institutions to generate policies that allow the time and quality of life to be prolonged to the maximum. “For this we provide the means, with technology and advice” one of the priorities of the new center which, as the mayor stated, has the objective of “prolonging personal autonomy” and generating services for the elderly in the region. In addition, a research center that allows reversing sedentary aging.
The space, located in a building next to the TecnoCampus, also becomes a space for reflection for experts and has already made it possible to design “an adapted home” with which to experiment with new advances. In addition, the Cures Office is a free complementary service that informs, guides and advises on cures in the social and health field. All of this combined in the Care City Lab project that is supported by the “Mataró Ciutat Caring” strategy.
Apart from providing assistance services, the Care City Lab is also centralized as a center for innovation, research and knowledge transfer in the sector. The project, promoted by the City Council, has been financed by European Funds. The partners of the project are the TecnoCampus, the Fundació Hospital Sant Jaume i Santa Magdalena, the Fundació El Maresme, the Consorci Sanitari del Maresme, the Institut Català de la Salut (ICS), Eurecat and the Fundació Institut Universitari per a la recerca a l ‘Attention Primary Health Jordi Gol i Gurina.
