The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has announced the elimination of extra time from the Spanish Super Cups, both in the masculine as in feminineafter approving the Delegated Commission a modification of the Regulatory Bases and Competition Rules.
Specifically, the RFEF explains in a statement that the motivation is «relieve the burden of minutes» for the athletes in the competitions that it is responsible for organizing, in a season in which the number of matches is generating a great stir due to all the injuries that are being generated.
The organization has assured that this change responds to the requests of the clubs participants and that, therefore, if at the end of the regulation time the tie persists, the winner will be decided through a round of penalties.
Thus, Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) will witness again, and until 2029, the new edition of the Spanish Super Cup, which will be played between the January 8 and 12 with the finalists of the Copa del Rey (Athletic Club and Mallorca) and the first two finishers of LaLiga (Real Madrid and FC Barcelona). This time without extra time, so the unforgettable image of Fede Valverde stopping Morata in the 115th minute, which helped Real Madrid win the title, will not be repeated.
For its part, the Spanish Women’s Super Cup will be held between January 21 and 26although I still don’t know the place, as happened last year. In it, the crosses will be between FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid against Real Sociedad.
