The 2024 edition of Black Friday is about to begin. In Mexico, multiple businesses will adopt the strategy to encourage consumption and increase their year-end sales. At WIRED en Español we tell you which stores participate, how to find the best deals and how to buy safely.
Black Friday was first celebrated in the 1960s in the United States. Its creation is attributed to the Macy’s store. The strategy was adopted en masse by other stores in the country in the 1980s. It later became popular around the world. Since then, every Friday after Thanksgiving, thousands of businesses in dozens of countries offer multiple promotions, discounts and offers on a wide range of products and services.
The day of greatest consumption in the US market left a global economic impact of 90 billion dollars in 2023, according to calculations by the consulting firm Optima Retail. Online sales represented about 45% of the total. Some physical stores in more than 40 countries have adopted the promotional strategy, according to the specialized site Global Black Friday. In Mexico, it is estimated that buyers spend around 5,300 pesos to purchase 3.5 products on average.

Black Friday will start on Friday, November 29 and, in some cases, will extend until Sunday, December 1. There is no official list of the establishments that will participate.
