If Jules Verne told the story of going around the world in eighty days, Morante de la Puebla is discovering his traveling spirit in a tour of different European cities that brim with culture. In love with art in all its expressions, José Antonio Morante, whose return is eagerly awaited by companies and fans alike, is enthralled with countries like Italy. From Venice to Rome, the current ‘Pope’ of bullfighting visits the Coliseum, recreates in Piazza del Campidoglio and walks through the streets of the capital like any other tourist. Or contemplate the Basilica of San Marcos accompanied by his representative, Pedro Jorge Marques.
As he was traveling, he could not be at the Brotherhood of Baratillo’s thanksgiving mass in memory of the bullfighting people who left this season, from top figures to box office winners. The spiritual director, Don Andrés Ybarra, drew beautiful metaphors about life and bullfighting.
Devotion to the Virgin of Charity, patron saint of the ancient Old Age of Bullfighting, spreads like her mantle. There was no shortage of Paco Ojeda – who placed a cape in the sacristy –, Manuel Jesús ‘El Cid’, Miguel Báez ‘Litri’, Tomás Campuzano, Eduardo Dávila Miura, Joaquín Moeckel and Rogelio Gómez, among many others.
Andrés Roca Rey could not attend, as he was in Peru; Juan Ortega, for his confirmation in Mexico, nor the aforementioned Morante, who on this occasion was exploring the Byzantine art of Istanbul. And he does it happily, soaking up the culture.
