He International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women has once again had a massive character in Asturies with several thousand people marching through the center of Oviedo/Uvieu in the unitary demonstration called by Asturies Feminist 8M‘.
‘It is not an isolated case, it is called patriarchy’, “Ista, ista, ista, Asturies feminist”, “Oviedo feminist” and “They are not deaths, they are murders” have been some of the most chanted songs in a demonstration that has counted with the support of all Asturian progressive and left-wing unions and parties, all feminist currents, as well as the LGTBI movement, numerous social organizations and NGOs.
The motto chosen this year, “Let shame change sides”is taken from the phrase directed by the French Gisèle Pelicot to their rapists.
Carmen Codesalone of the spokespersons for Asturies Feminist 8Mhas claimed the importance of going out to the streets to provoke “a cultural change in society.” “We want to change the focus. Making policies and focusing only on the victims is not enough. We need those men who claim to be our allies to really be our allies and that every time they see a sexist attitude, they disapprove of it,” he highlighted in statements to journalists, after denouncing the “obstacles” received by the government of Alfredo Canteli to the organization of the demonstration.
The manifesto of this 25N has emphasized the need to end “the fear and shame that oppresses the victims” and “to break the patriarchal pact of silence that protects the aggressors.” The text warns of the “sexist and racist treatment suffered by refugee, racialized and migrant women” and focuses on the relevance of “ending the discrimination” suffered by women with functional diversity” and the “labor, economic and patrimonial”.
The Palestinian flags and the denunciation of genocide in the Middle East were not missing in the demonstration, which concluded in a crowded Town Hall square.
