Defending champion Ding Liren somewhat surprisingly won the first game of the World Chess Championship in Singapore. The Chinese, who had previously reported depression and sleep disorders, won against his challenger Dommaraju Gukesh after just over four hours. At first things looked rather bad for him. Ding played with the black pieces and chose the French opening. But after just a few moves, the 32-year-old took 35 minutes to think about it, took off his jacket, seemed nervous and a little perplexed. But then he stabilized, and the further the duel progressed, the shorter the time for Gukesh to think about it became. This put the Indian under pressure and led to mistakes which Ding took advantage of. After 42 moves, Gukesh gave up. At the World Cup, the two opponents will play a maximum of 14 games with a long reflection period until December 12th. If the score is 7:7, the decision is made in tiebreak games with short consideration times.
