Motorcyclists are not only the most physically vulnerable in the event of an accident, but they also face an invisible enemy: pollution. While cars protect their occupants with mandatory filters, motorcycle users are left completely exposed. This has been the starting point of Zyon Helmets.
This Madrid startup, founded in 2022 by Tanguy Uzel and Guzmán Colilla, has designed a motorcycle helmet that has a air filtration system which protects motorists from pollution and allergies. “The motorcycle helmet sector had been without major advances for years,” says Uzel, CEO and co-founder of the startup. «Disruptive technologies, designs adapted to real needs and a more modern approach to marketing were missing. “We realized there was a huge opportunity to change that.”
Zyon Helmets not only offers technical innovations, but also introduces functionalities that transform the user experience. «We integrate a microchip in the helmet, connected to an app, which informs the user about impacts, wear or the need to replace the filter. This ensures that the helmet is always in optimal condition,” explains the CEO. Additionally, the helmet includes an innovative system known as ‘MIPS’ (Multidirectional Impact Protection System) to reduce rotational impacts and an active rear light to improve visibility on the road. “We wanted this helmet to reflect that it has been designed by riders who know the product and the market,” he adds. The safe air filtration system, called ‘Breath Safe System’, is the heart of this innovation. «On the European market there is no helmet that protects against air pollution and allergies. The only thing that exists are masks, but they are uncomfortable and impractical for motorcyclists,” says Uzel.
The company’s patented system is passive, fanless, and uses advanced multi-layer filters. “We make sure that it meets the strictest approvals, so that it is useful both in Europe and in other international markets,” he highlights. Besides, sustainability is integrated into its design: “The filters are interchangeable and managed through the app, which reduces the environmental impact and ensures that the helmet works like the first day.”
Zyon Helmets has had key support since its creation, as it has been selected by incubators such as Lanzadera and L’Escalator. With a launch scheduled for 2025, the startup is preparing to break into the global market. “First we want to meet the demand for our current reserves and then expand to Europe,” he details. In addition, the startup aims to license its filtration system to other brands. “Our goal is that, one day, filters in helmets will be as essential as they are in cars,” concludes the CEO.
