The Lions Gate will open next Friday and Saturday to celebrate the twenty-eighth open days of the Congress of Deputies, where you can visit the Palacio de la Carrera de San Jerónimo and other emblematic places of the Chamber in uninterrupted hours from 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
In these days, which They have been celebrated since 1997 As part of the commemoration of Constitution Day, citizens have the opportunity to cross the bronze door, the work of José María Sánchez Pescador, reserved for special occasions such as solemn acts presided over by the King and the opening sessions of the General Courts of each Legislature.
These will be the second open days of 2024, after those held on June 14 and 15 in which the elections of June 15, 1977 were commemorated, from which the Congress and Senate of the Constituent Legislature emerged, as indicated by the Lower House in a note.
Citizens will access the Palace through the bronze door to begin the visit in the Lobby of Isabel II, where you can see a copy of the Constitution of 1812, drawn up by the Cortes of Cádiz and guarded by the statue of the Queen, sculpted in Carrara marble by Josep Piquer i Duart.
The tour
The tour continues in the Conference Hall, known as the Hall of Lost Steps. In this room, the vault stands out with four allegories of the continents, law, justice, religion and abundance, the work of Vicente Camarón, and the 28 medallions representing politicians most relevant of the 19th century. The center of the room is where institutional visits are received and other events such as the Constitution Day reception are held.
Next, visitors will be able to enter the Hemicycle or Session Room, where the 350 seats of deputieswhere you can see the decoration of the vault, with the paintings of Carlos Luis de Ribera; and the fan skylight that lets natural light into the room where the Plenary Session of the Chamber meets.
On both sides of the Presidency are the paintings ‘The oath of the Cortes of Cádiz’ and ‘María de Molina presenting her son before the Cortes of Valladolid’, the caryatids, the stained glass windows, the large effigies of the Catholic kings located on the front of the Hemicycle and all the details of this semicircular space.
The visit continues to the first floor of the Palace and tours the gallery where the portraits of the presidents of the Congress of Deputies are exhibited, the work of some of the most relevant artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. From there, and across the bridge over the Patio de Floridablanca that connects the Palace with the Extension building, the tour continues through the Constitutional room, the Ernest Lluch room and the Cedaceros lobby.
The form to request an appointment to participate in the open days is now enabled, which can be found on the Congress website, in which each visitor can reserve a place with a maximum of three companions and up to five children under 14 years of age. No advance reservation will be necessary for people over 65 years of age and a companion.
