That the left takes the pulse of citizens and seeks a connection with civil society as a prior step to a political and organic refoundation is already a modus operandi in space. The Communist Party of Andalusia did it in 1984 with Julio Anguita to the front through the Call for Andalusia
He also did Yolanda Diaz in July 2022 with its listening process, which served as a programmatic basis and political impulse for Sumar. Now it is the turn of Antonio Maíllo’s United Left, which has decided to resort to a new citizen assembly process as a preliminary step to the reorganization of the political space of the alternative left.
This Saturday the federal coordinator of the party has formally launched the so-called Call for Democracy, a process of reconnection between politics and citizens to remove the left from the “trenches of resistance” and put it on the offensive against the reactionary wave.
The design of the process is similar to what has taken place on other occasions: Maíllo has presented in society a manifesto which will serve as the basis for a debate that, starting in January, the party will share with the citizens “of each municipality and city in the State.”
The process will end in spring, after civil society has put together the “tiles of a mosaic”, that of a left that once again faces a reorganization process after a political cycle that has greatly worn out the space (led until now by Sumar). .
The Call for Andalusia by Julio Anguita
In this way, IU is presented in this process as the new architect of a project that will have the enormous challenge of stopping a global reactionary wave that is advancing positions by leaps and bounds. This does not mean that the organization led by Maíllo is the only one to apply for this role of demiurge of a left that Sumar and Podemos could also aspire to lead.
Precedents can act as mirrors in this type of process. In 1982 the Communist Party of Spainburdened by poor electoral results, faced the reflection that a single political formation, even if strong, could not undertake the major transformations that society needs.
This reflection was resolved at the XI Congress of the PCE, held in December 1983, which approved the “Social and Political Convergence of the Left“, as an objective to expand and widen the bases of the space, and also to reconnect with citizens.
The PCA sought to awaken “the collective will” of the Andalusian people
The first formation to materialize this idea and follow a roadmap based on it is the Communist Party of Andalusia, which in 1984 began a reconfiguration process that could transform society and politics in this territory. Thus was born the so-called Call for Andalusia, led by Julio Anguita, an episode in which the PCA carried out a true reset to take root with civil society.
The objective was clear: to awaken social awareness and “collective will” of the Andalusian people; the tool, too: an assembly and participatory process for society to unite its demands, desires and problems that would serve to draw up a common roadmap.
Agricultural technicians and day laborers, teachers and students, bricklayers, doctors, trade unionists, activists and political leaders debated together in assemblies whose conclusions, far from remaining on empty paper, were translated into a program called the Poppy Document, which started from a first manifesto prepared by the PCA, called Lions Document.
Through a synthesis process and from this civil society conversation (which lasted four months), in November 1984 around 900 assembly amendments were debated and, finally, the Central Committee of the PCA approved the definitive document of the Call for Andalusia, the one already mentioned. Poppy Document.
The listening process of Yolanda Díaz
The document also proposed Julio Anguita as leader of the candidacy for the Presidency of the Junta de Andalucía. He electoral result of the Call for Andalusia was more than satisfactory: 19 seats in the 1986 Andalusian elections, 11 more seats than in the 1982 elections, the best result in its history so far, and currently the second best result of the left in Andalusia (only surpassed by the 20 seats that Luis Carlos Rejón obtained with Izquierda Unida Los Verdes-Call for Andalusia).
He listening process carried out by Yolanda Díaz In 2022, it followed a good part of the guidelines that Anguita and the PCA had defined decades ago: developing a basic program-manifesto that would serve as a framework for an assembly process that would complete it and give it shape from the bottom up, from the territories and municipalities. to the state. In this process, Sumar’s guidelines were defined.
Now it is the turn of Maíllo’s Call for Democracy, the project with which IU aspires to get the left out of the trenches to undertake its own offensive, and also the project with which this organization takes a position in space.
