Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio has not had an easy personal life, despite the successes he has achieved in the world of basketball. The 34-year-old player had to say goodbye to his mother in 2016who died from lung cancer.
Although he has spoken about it publicly on other occasions, The Catalan reflected on cancer and its prevention in a talk with Juan Ramón Lucas on the Sr. Wolf Podcast podcast.
“You always think that it is not going to touch you and it touched me very closely… the most important person in my life, a reference. It can happen to any of us and habits are key in prevention. We have more influence than we think. It’s not a toss-up of whether it’s your turn or not. “We can help our body prevent that from happening,” he said.
For Ricky it is important to share feelings at such a vital stage, although he recognizes that he did not do it: “I am very introverted and I like to keep things for myself, but later I have seen that sharing this experience You can help people who are going through it and feel a little more accompanied. Emotional support helps to heal it and, above all, not to have such a bad time.”
His mother’s illness also affected him on a sporting level. “You see that you have everything but you feel nothing. “I was playing in the NBA, I had everything I had to have, I was succeeding… But there was something wrong,” he explained.
Asked if he broke completely, Rubio reflected: “No, because I’m here today, but I did break. In the end life is about that. “From living the experiences that break you and then rebuild you to be stronger.”
“In the end, not everything is as beautiful as they paint it to us as when we are little and all the stories end well. The reality is that there are good times and there are hard times.“he added.
“You don’t always have to want to live the beautiful moments, You have to know how to learn and live through the hard moments… “The light exists because the darkness exists,” he said.
