Thousands of drivers have received good news from the DGT: it is possible to change the environmental label of their vehicle after admitting errors in the initial assignment. This procedure especially benefits vehicles classified as label B, which can now opt for the C label.
The update is relevant, since environmental labels are key to accessing urban areas with pollution restrictions and enjoying tax or parking advantages.

In 2016, the DGT began classifying vehicles according to their environmental impact, granting them badges such as B, C, Eco and Zero Emissions. This classification was based on the date of registration rather than the cars’ actual CO₂ emissions.
For example, gasoline vehicles registered since January 2006 and diesel vehicles since September 2015 receive the C label. However, this criterion generated discrepancies, leaving many cars with the wrong category, which has forced the DGT to acknowledge its failure and allow updates.
To change the label, the owner must carry out a simple procedure. The first step is to request an emissions certificate from the vehicle manufacturer, available at its dealerships. This document verifies compliance with the corresponding Euro standards: Euro 6 for diesel and Euro 4, 5 or 6 for gasoline in the case of label C.
The cost of the certificate varies between 100 and 150 euros. Then, with this document in hand, you must go to a Traffic Headquarters to update the Vehicle Registry, paying a fee of 8.67 euros.
Although this process involves a cost that many believe should be assumed by the DGT, the benefit is tangible. Having a C label offers advantages over a B label, such as a longer validity period and preferential access to restricted areas.
In addition, this distinction ensures a lower impact in the event of possible future restrictions in large cities that seek to reduce polluting emissions.
Therefore, it is recommended that drivers check if their vehicle can opt for the correction. The rectification by the DGT marks a precedent for how environmental labels are managed in Spain.
