The exploration for a government coalition made up of the CDU, Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) and SPD in Saxony has failed. The talks were broken off without result, as the BSW announced. It was not possible to agree on the so-called peace formula, migration policy and the issue of finance.
After a third meeting on the topic of war and peace, the BSW accused the potential coalition partners of not wanting to agree to a commitment to peace: “Anyone who does politics like that loses the people in the country,” explained state chairwoman Sabine Zimmermann. “This terrible war of aggression by Russia in Ukraine, which violates international law, worries so many people here in Saxony that a new state government must address these concerns and fears. Anyone who doesn’t do this is closing their eyes and ears.”
Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) blamed the BSW namesake for the failure of the probe. “The fact that Ms. Wagenknecht is putting her Saxon people on their feet like this is not a good development,” said Kretschmer and spoke of a great disappointment. The exploration was surprisingly stopped: “We didn’t see it like that.” The decision was not made in Saxony, but in Berlin.
:AfD wants to exclude suspected terrorists after raid
Three party members are said to belong to the suspected neo-Nazi group “Saxon Separatists”. After this became known during a raid, the party immediately wanted to revoke their membership rights.
Wagenknecht: “Our place is in the opposition”
Wagenknecht, on the other hand, rejected this accusation on Wednesday evening. She sees responsibility with the other parties. “Unfortunately, the CDU and SPD did not understand the election results,” she told the South German newspaper with. “The BSW is not the last reserve of power for business as usual, but was elected to enable real change in a solid government: for peace, better education, a stop to uncontrolled migration, internal security and freedom of expression. If these goals fail due to the blockade of the other parties, our place is in the opposition.”
This shows that the BSW is sticking to what it has made clear again and again in the past few days: it will only govern if it intervenes on issues that are so important to the alliance, such as the stationing of US medium-range missiles or arms deliveries to Ukraine can expect significant concessions from the other parties.
The compromise negotiated in Erfurt was not enough for the BSW federal leadership and caused a lot of trouble. In a decision by the party executive committee on the results recorded in the Thuringian exploratory paper, it was already said: If the CDU and SPD do not show themselves willing to move on the issues that are important to the BSW, we should refrain from entering into a joint government. The BSW in Saxony is already making this a reality.
Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht
:There can only be one
It was foreseeable that things wouldn’t go well between Sahra Wagenknecht and Katja Wolf for long. The BSW from Berlin is broadcasting more and more mercilessly in Thuringia – as if there were people with learning difficulties sitting at the negotiating table with the SPD and CDU. Well then: you or me?
It is unclear what will happen next in Saxony. According to Kretschmer, this is now being discussed in the party committees. You need a break to think about over the weekend.
Since the CDU rules out coalitions with the AfD and the Left, Kretschmer basically only has the option of forming a minority government. Strong conservative forces in the Union have recently repeatedly called for this. Kretschmer spoke out against it. With a government like this you are in negotiations every day, which takes up an incredible amount of energy, he argued. On Tuesday, Kretschmer had a surprise meeting with AfD leader Jörg Urban, where they allegedly discussed “state political issues” such as this Leipziger Volkszeitung reported. However, Kretschmer once again ruled out collaboration between the CDU and AfD.
According to the constitution, the Prime Minister of Saxony must be elected within four months of the constitution of the new state parliament. The deadline expires at the beginning of February 2025. Otherwise, parliament must be dissolved and a new election will take place.
