For months, the biggest collective bargaining round of the year was characterized by tough confrontation. But in the end, because the economic crisis is worsening, the agreement succeeds on the first real attempt: after a marathon night meeting on Tuesday morning in Hamburg, the employers and the IG Metall union agreed on a pilot wage agreement that will apply nationwide. Four million employees at car manufacturers and other industrial sectors will earn 5.1 percent more in the future, with an annual special payment adding that to 5.5 percent. There is also a one-off payment of 600 euros. This wage increase is spread over 25 months, which is how long the new collective agreement runs.
